Simple Complexity

The dichotomy between simplicity and complexity dominates our lives. Simple we want it and try hard to keep it so. Yet complex interactions, relations, and dependencies make it, oh, so unpredictable.

This blog is going to be about thought, philosophy, maybe religion, and mostly worldview. What thinking pattern do we need to address problems in a globalized world? Why have we arrived where we are today and how will we move forward in the decades to come? How do we arrive at a thinking pattern that supports our decision-making in an age of information overflow? Where will technology lead us – and what can it really accomplish?

Understanding complexity allows for valid simplifications. The simple rules – divide and conquer – do not describe reality sufficiently anymore. Science knows for long enough that it takes tools like stochastic and partial differential equations to approximate reality. As the number of  deterministic influential factors increase, a complex system emerges. Inherently, its results are not predictable given all constituting input information. This applies to economies and markets, organizations, countries and societies, information systems, climate, biological systems, traffic, … .

If rules of complexity are understood, a holistic view emerges – eventually simplifying things. But it requires a shift in thinking patterns. Are you ready to adopt new paradigms? Are you aware, that your own thoughts might hinder you solving the problems at hand?
